Bloodwood Nuts -  Kutjarnparru Pirrki-Pirrki

This painting is called “Kutjarnparru Pirrki-Pirrki” which means “Bloodwood Nut or Apple” in the Kalkadoon language.

The Bloodwood nut is a delicacy to the Kalkadoon people and is easily found on the Bloodwood tree. An insect will firstly sting the bark of the bloodwood tree and lay eggs inside, the eggs grow forming a big sack or gall. It is best eaten when still moist inside and the growing insect is sweet to eat. I have tasted this nut or apple and it tastes like coconut, if left too long it is very dry.  The bloodwood tree has many different uses for the Kalkadoon people including a variety of medicines.
