Red Snake - Mila Takujan

My name is Jesse Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting is called “Mila Takujan” which means “Red Snake” in the Kalkadoon language and this painting tells the story of the red belly black snake who had to slither through a bushfire to escape and he then soothed his wounds in a nearby waterhole which is why his back is now black and his belly is red.
