My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary indigenous artist and my heritage lies with the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.
This painting is called “Walking together” and it represents Australia’s movement forward towards reconciliation, acceptance and equality.
The footprints at the top represent the white and black man both walking their own separate paths and journeys with a distinct gap between them at all times. As time has passed the white and black man now walk together with their journeys and paths crossing and walking together side by side until they have reached their goal which is a united Australia.
All races join hands and dance under the sun and moon which gives life to us all. They dance and celebrate this new united country that accepts all people from all races and treats them all as equals.
The bright coloured circles and dots represent the many communities, individuals and organisations that have worked tirelessly to achieve this equality and the white spirit trails connect us all to each other and our land.
The shaking hands represent our combined movement forward as one.
