Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo - Yawirra

My name is Brooke Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This painting is called “Yawirra” in the Kalkadoon language which means “Sulphur Crested Cockatoo”.

Long, long ago the cockatoo was bald and had no crest and so cockatoo devised a plan and tricked the corella into giving her crest to the cockatoo who kept it and never gave it back, to this day the cockatoo proudly wears her crest while the corella is bald.
