Bush Medicine - Munangu Mirrithin
My name is Brooke Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.
This is my interpretation of “Walumarra Business” which means “Womens Business” in the Kalkadoon language.
Women have always played an important role in Aboriginal culture, they are the givers of life, the keepers of knowledge, the teachers, carers and the nurturers. They had extensive knowledge of hunting and gathering bush foods and medicines and would use them to heal many ailments and would teach and nurture the next generation. In my painting the community symbols represent, the women gathering together sharing knowledge, performing ceremonies or preparing the bush food and medicines, the women sit on the ground with their coolamon and diggings sticks next to them, when they stand up the U symbol is the imprint that was left in the dirt. This painting depicts the importance of women and the many significant roles they had.
