Goanna - Jurutu

My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting is called “Jurutu” in the Kalkadoon language which means Goanna and it tells the story of the goanna and his journey through life. From the vast desert and sunburnt outback to the lush bushland and coastal edges, the goanna can be found moving through all parts of Country. His footprints represent the path he walks, a journey rich with purpose, tradition and meaning. The goanna is a vital part of culture, a source of nourishment, storytelling, and deep cultural significance across many communities.
