Waterholes - Kuukili

My name is Jesse Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from Mount Isa in Queensland.

This painting is called “Kuukili” which means “Waterhole” in the Kalkadoon language.

In my painting the good spirit Kur-gun-yee brings the rain to Kalkadoon country, it falls relentlessly which is represented by the many small dots. The waterholes represented by the circles begin to fill and then overflow and also fill the next waterhole and so on until all of the Kuukili in Kalkadoon country are full and ready to sustain life once more.
