Fresh, Salt Water Dreaming
Inyalngu, Milyuka Kuu Ritjinguthinha
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This painting is my interpretation of “Inyalngu, Milyuka Kuu Ritjinguthinha” which means “Fresh, Salt Water Dreaming” in the Kalkadoon language.
The ocean has always been an important food source for aboriginal people, both those who’s tribal territory was along the coast and those who would travel to the sea to hunt and gather food. This painting depicts the beauty and majesty of the ocean and the graceful agility of all of the sea creatures that live together in harmony. The bright colours and stars represent the life and vibrancy of the ocean and the path of fish which swims through the middle of the painting represents the barramundi who swim downstream year after year from the fresh water back to their ocean home.
