Platypus Dreaming - Rantani Kalu Ritjinguthinha
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Aboriginal artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This is my interpretation of “Rantani Kalu Ritjinguthinha” which means in the Kalkadoon language “Platypus Dreaming”.
This artwork honours the platypus, a gentle traveller of the waterways whose quiet nature hides an incredible strength. Moving between riverbanks and flowing streams, the platypus reminds us that we don’t need to follow the paths of others, we can create our own, one step and one ripple at a time.
The circles and water patterns represent the places where journeys begin, cross and return. They echo the rhythm of moving water, calm, cleansing and full of life. These ripples show how every action, no matter how small, shapes the world around us.
This painting is a reminder to stay true to who you are, to trust the natural flow of your own journey, and to find beauty in the quiet moments along the way, just like the platypus gliding through its world with calm purpose.
