Ngaimai - To Hunt

My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people, this painting is my interpretation of Ngaimai, To Hunt. It tells the story of hunting on Country and the knowledge that has been passed down for generations.

For thousands of years, hunting has been a part of culture, sustaining our people and providing food for family and community. It takes knowledge, patience and a deep understanding of the land and environment around us, knowing where animals travel, recognising their tracks and using techniques that have been passed down over thousands of years.

This painting represents the journey of the hunt, the animals, the land and the knowledge and skills that have been shared from one generation to the next. It celebrates the connection between hunting, family, culture and Country and the importance of carrying this knowledge forward for generations to come.
