Water Dragon – Napa walkaartu

My name is Brooke Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This painting is called “Napa Walkaartu” which means “Water Dragon” in the Kalkadoon language.

This artwork follows the journey of the Eastern Water Dragon as he moves through his landscape, from riverbanks to tree limbs, from stillness to motion. His path is marked by the footprints he leaves behind, each one a symbol of his connection to the land and waters that sustain him.

The flowing river represents life and continuity, while the trees he climbs offer warmth, rest and perspective. The circles throughout the piece reflect important places where he finds food, safety, and familiarity. Napa walkaartu is a story of harmony between creature and Country, reminding us that even the smallest journeys are part of something greater.
