Crocodile - Yurtuyurtu
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland. This painting is my interpretation of “Yurtuyurtu” which means “Crocodile” in the Kalkadoon language.
Beneath the surface of calm waters, the crocodile drifts, silent, steady, and timeless. It moves with the slow rhythm of the river, following paths shaped by the flow of life itself.
The meeting of water and land tells a story of harmony and balance. The deep blues and golds ripple together like sunlight on water, symbolising the strength and calm that exist side by side. Every line and pattern reflects the movement of Country, how it breathes, flows, and renews.
The crocodile embodies patience and awareness. It reminds us that strength is not always loud, it can live quietly beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to rise.
Yurtuyurtu is a story of stillness and power, of life connected through water and earth. It speaks of the flow of time, the rhythm of the seasons, and the deep calm that rests within Country.
