Matjumpa Ritjinguthinha

My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting is called “Matjumpa Ritjinguthinha” in the Kalkadoon language which means “Kangaroo Dreaming” and it tells the story of how the kangaroo got her pouch and a mothers undying love for her children putting herself in danger to save her young joeys from a fire.

This artwork serves as a reminder of the powerful bond between a mother and her children. It speaks to the lengths a mother will go to protect her young, embodying the spirit of resilience and love that transcends even the fiercest of challenges.

Through Matjumpa's story, we are reminded of the strength found in love and the courage it inspires. The painting not only commemorates a mother's sacrifice but also stands as a symbol of hope, illustrating that even in the face of adversity, love can provide a path to safety and survival.
