Rosella - Yarawala Thurruun

My name is Brooke Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting tells the story of “Yaruwala thurruun” which means “rosella” in the Kalkadoon language.

The rosella is a bird of brilliance, her feathers painted in vibrant red and vivid blue. She carries the colours of harmony, each one flowing into the next like a living rainbow.

Her song is gentle yet bright, a reminder of joy and balance. Wherever her wings take her, she brings light to the day, lifting spirits and drawing people closer together.

The rosella’s presence is a gift, a symbol of beauty, connection, and the threads that bind people to one another and to the land. In her colours and her call, we are reminded of the wonder woven through every moment of life. The rosella carries with her stories of culture, her colours a reminder of the knowledge and connections that live within Country.
