The Magpie - kulpurru
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.
This painting is a reflection of the magpie’s journey through life, a bird that’s not only iconic but deeply woven into the lives of Australians.
From country towns to busy cities, we wake to its song, sharp and soulful, echoing through gum trees and across open skies. Its striking black and white feathers, bold and beautiful, make it instantly recognisable.
Magpies live closely beside us. They raise families, defend their nests, and return to the same places year after year. This painting honours that presence, not just the bird itself, but its spirit, strength, and the quiet comfort it brings to so many.
Kulpurru reminds us of the beauty in everyday, the power of voice and the deep connection between land, life and song.
