The Magpie - kulpurru

My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting tells the story of “kulpurru” which means “The Magpie” in the Kalkadoon language. Kulpurru is an important part of Kalkdoon culture as one of the creator beings from the Dreamtime. Every morning she sings her unmistakable tune to welcome the sunrise and new warmth of the day.
