The Owl - Milthauun
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people, this painting is called Milthauun which means the owl and it represents the owl as it travels across the land, watching, listening and learning.
In my painting the community symbols throughout the piece represent the many places and communities the owl visits throughout its lifetime. Each holds memories, connections and lessons, which help to shape the owl’s story, with the travelling lines connecting these places together.
The colours flowing through the painting reflect the changing times of day, from the soft first light of morning, through the vibrancy of the day, to the warm colours of the sunset and the cool stillness of the night. With each passing day the owl continues its journey, adapting and growing.
The owl reminds us that wisdom and knowledge grow over time through observation, patience and experience. Like the owl, we are shaped by the places we go, the people we meet and the stories we collect along the way.
