The Peewee - Kurityityin

My name is Brooke Sutton and I am a contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.

This painting tells the story of “kurityityin” which means “The Peewee” in the Kalkadoon language.

The peewee is a small bird with a big story, her feathers painted in the colours of night and day. She is found right across Australia, from the saltwater to the desert sands, from the high mountains to the wide open plains.

Wherever people walk, the peewee is never far, her call is heard by children playing, by families gathering, and by Elders watching the seasons change. She has been part of people’s lives for as long as they can remember, always close, always present.

The peewee carries connection, she ties together Country and community, reminding us that no matter the distance, we share the same land, the same sky, and the same song.

She may be small, but she is everywhere, a gentle reminder that beauty, spirit, and belonging can be found in the simplest of places, carried on the wings of the peewee.

In Kalkadoon culture, the peewee is more than just a bird, she is a creator spirit, a powerful presence whose story has shaped the land and the people who belong to it.
